Jungle mein mor nacha – Lata Mangeshkar – Shankar-Jaikishan – Waheeda/Madhumati | Shatranj (1969)

Movie – Shatranj (1969)

The song Jungle mein mor nacha was featured in Gemini Studios’ spy thriller Shatranj (1969), produced by S S Vasan and N N Sippy and directed by S S Vasan. This was his last movie as a director. The movie starred Rajendra Kumar, Waheeda Rahman, Mahmood, Shashikala, Helen, Achala Sachdev, Madan Puri, Agha, etc.

The movie begins with a helicopter taking away prisoners from an enemy country. The invisible leader of the country assigns a couple of his henchmen to find out more about the man, who gets the prisoners released. They decide to ensnare him through a dancer Meena (Waheeda Rahman), who is in Hong Kong for a dance performance. In the next scene, Meena performs this song.

Song – Jungle mein mor nacha

Hasrat Jaipuri has penned the lyrics and Shankar-Jaikishan has composed the tune of the song Jungle mein mor nacha.

The girl says, “A peacock danced in the jungle. Who saw it? I did.”

Video – Jungle mein mor nacha

Director of photography is K H Kapadia. Dance choreography is by B Hiralal-Satyanarayan-Surya Kumar-P L Raj.

The video begins with Waheeda Rahman beginning to dance with the other female dancers. Madhumati joins her in the dance. The dancers wear peacock feathers and most of the movements of the dancers are like peacocks.

However, the choreographer has got a scientific concept wrong. It’s the peacocks, which have beautiful feathers and dance well and not the peahen. Toward the end of the song, Waheeda Rahman yearns for her beloved and Madhumati acts like a peahen licking Waheeda Rahman’s tears.

Lata Mangeshkar sang this song for Waheeda Rahman and Madhumati. Achala Sachdev and others look on.

Cultural Influence

There is no cultural influence on the song. But, the dance imitates that of peacocks. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for Waheeda Rahman’s grace.
