Specialized Experience Requirements: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must also have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the next lower grade level (GS-09 for the GS-11), directly related education, or a combination of directly related education and experience in geological field work. To qualify for the GS-11: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, applicants must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in geology related work.Examples of specialized experience includes: Applying established technology in routine ways to well-defined, moderate sized geological projects; Planning and carrying out routine geological work; and organizing geological work by following prescribed methods and guidelines and recognizing conditions and results that may affect the findings OR; In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants may use education to qualify for this position, as follows: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or, Ph.D. or, equivalent doctoral degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study OR; In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants may combine education and experience to qualify for this position as follows: Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Demands:The individual works primarily in an office setting at this level. There may be some walking, standing, or bending. The individual may also, on occasion be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, and perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples.Work Environment:The work is performed primarily in an office setting. However when necessary to complete the work, there may be outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure requires some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.
