Movie – Band Baja Baaraat (2010)
The song, Aivi aivi, was featured in the 2010 Yash-Raj Films’ romedy Band Baja Baaraat (Wedding Planners) directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma in the lead.
Fun-loving and street-smart, Bittoo Sharma (Ranveer Singh), gate-crashes a wedding for free food. Shruti Kakkar (Anushka Sharma) confronts him. Shruti is an intelligent, quirky girl and is the assistant of the wedding coordinator. Bittoo acts as if he is one of the video guys and makes a video of her performing a wedding song. He tries to impress her the next day with a DVD of the song. But, she refused to be flirted with, insisting that she wanted to become a wedding planner.
Bittoo is being pressurized by his father to return to the village to work in the sugarcane fields. At the same time, Shruti is being convinced to get married asap by her relatives. She asks for 5 years to make it big in the wedding planning industry. If she is not successful, she says she would marry anyone they say. On the other hand, Bittoo tells his father that he would not be able to come back because he was going to take up the wedding planning career. When Bittoo goes to Shruti with the idea of partnership, she refuses since that might lead to romantic complications.
The pair goes to meet the famous wedding planner Chanda Narang (Shena Gamat), with hopes of being hired. Chanda is not interested. But, when Chanda loses a male worker, she offers Bittoo a job. Bittoo insists that he be hired together with Shruti. Soon, the pair realizes that Chanda has a bad work ethic and cheats her clients, delivering nothing close to what her clients had wanted. When Chanda is confronted by a client, she blames Shruti. Bittoo defends his business partner and the pair quits their job, forming their own company, i.e., Shaadi Mubarak, Shruti’s original idea of a wedding planning company.
They begin with low-budget projects. During the celebration of one of the low-budget weddings that they organize, Bittoo engages his college friends as DJ, for free, despite Shruti’s suggestion against it. Since nothing exciting was happening in the wedding, Bittoo himself comes forward to sing this song.
Song – Aivi aivi
Saleem-Suleiman and Amitabh Bhattacharya have been credited for the music and the lyrics of Aivi aivi, respectively.
I suppose this song can be called a traditional Punjabi folk song, with a western twist.
Video – Aivi aivi
The cinematography is by Aseem Mishra. Dance choreography is by Vaibhavi Merchant.
The video opens with the musicians performing on their musical instruments without any enthusiasm. The guests are also not attracted to the music. Ranveer Singh jumps in front of the musicians and tries to get some excitement into the event with his dance. Anushka Sharma does not have any hopes of the song creating the audience’s interest in the music.
But, Ranveer Singh manages to create interest in the song, easily. Anushka Sharma also joins in the song and dance. By now, all the guests have joined in the dance. The event is a super duper success. The song stops abruptly as the guests are happy with the lead pair’s performance. The video also ends there.
Artists
The playback of Aivi aivi has been credited to Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan. The onscreen performances are by Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and others.
Cultural Influence
This song has some influence of Bhangra. Perhaps, calling it Bhangra pop would be right. The song and the artists are ok. The video is watchable for the same.
