Actor-Director Girish Karnad expired this morning. He was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, predominantly working in Bollywood and South India. His emergence as a playwright in the 1960s is considered as the coming of age of modern Kannada playwriting. He bagged the Padma Shri (1974), Padma Bhushan (1992) and Jnanpith Award (1998) for his valuable contribution to literature in India. His contribution over 4 decades lies in the use of mythology and History to tackle contemporary issues. He translated his plays into English and received accolades for his works. Historian Ramchandra Guha called him the Quiet Patriot. He had been a social activist as well. Known as a fearless activist, he expired today at 81 after a period of prolonged illness.
