Qualification Summary
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following requirements: For the GS-05 Level: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience includes assisting with the use of technical medical instruments and utilizing aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; exercising sterile techniques; handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures (such as open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurospine, microsurgery, and total joint replacement surgery); assisting with cleaning techniques and determining the types of detergents to use on various items, handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene; using in-depth knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts required. ~OR~ Combination: A combination of completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as listed above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. Transcripts required. For the GS-06 Level: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience includes assisting with the use of technical medical instruments and utilizing aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; exercising sterile techniques; utilizing sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization; handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures (such as open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurospine, microsurgery, and total joint replacement surgery); assisting with cleaning techniques and determining the types of detergents to use on various items, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies, handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene; using in-depth knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (or 9 semester hours or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts required. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts required. For the GS-07 Level: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience includes utilizing knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect sterile field during surgery; exercises sterile technique to include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging, storage, and shelf life; handles medical instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures (such as open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurospine, microsurgery, and total joint replacement surgery); perform proper cleaning techniques and determine the types of detergents to use on various items, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handles contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene; using in-depth knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts required. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
