Qualification Summary
Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. To qualify for the 1825 series:
General Requirements: Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years;
Valid State driver’s license;
Fluency in the English language;
No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and
High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Requirements:
Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector position in a safe and efficient manner, and must meet all of the following requirements: Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted) without strain.
Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted).
Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others or that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft. Interviews and Assessments: Applicants may be required to appear for an interview and/or other assessments to determine whether they possess the necessary competencies and personal qualities to successfully perform Aviation Safety Inspector duties.In addition, applicants for Aviation Safety Inspector (Operations) positions will be required to demonstrate proficiency in an airplane or simulator. * NOTE:Possession of all requirements will be verified prior to appointment.
-AND-Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.This experience need not have been in the federal government.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the GS-13 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Planning and implementing an organization’s aviation safety program in compliance with federal and other applicable aviation safety regulations, policies, and procedures;
Tracking and auditing an organization’s aviation safety management practices; and
Identifying and addressing potential safety weaknesses in existing policies, directives, and practices.
