Composer Lakshmikant Kudalkar’s Death Anniversary

Today is Composer Lakshmikant Kudalkar’s death anniversary. He was the first half of the Music Duo Lakshmikant-Pyarelal or Lakshmi-Pyare as they are still known. Lakshmikantji learnt to play the mandolin during childhood, spending 2 years with the popular mandolin player Hussain Ali. Some Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts later, in the 1940s, he studied mandolin under Bal Mukund Indorkar and violin from Husnlal of Husnlal-Bhagatram fame. Post a few child roles in Bhakt Pundalik (1949) and Aankhen (1950) and some Gujarati movies, he joined hands with a recently made musician friend Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma and established the music composer team. Then, there was no looking back.

Some of my favorite Bollywood songs composed by Lakshmi-Pyare in the 1960s are:

Rahi manwa dukh ki chinta… Dosti (1964)

Sawan ka mahina… Milan (1967)

Dil vil pyar vyar… Shagird (1968)

Kaise rahoon chup… Inteqam (1969)

Bindiya chamkegi… Do Raaste (1969)
