Movie – Watan ke Rakhwale (1987):
Tana tan tan appeared in 1987 A G Films’ drama-thriller Watan Ke Rakhwale (Saviors of the Nation) directed by T Rama Rao and produced by Firoz A Nadiadwala. The movie starred Mithun Chakraborty, Sridevi, Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt, Moushumi Chatterjee, Prem Chopra, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, etc.
Radha (Sridevi) lives with her widowed businessman father Raja (Sudhir Dalvi), her maternal grandmother (Lalita Pawar) and paternal uncle, Dr. Narendra (Prem Chopra). Dr. Narendra runs a mental hospital. Radha’s father dies in a car accident and Dr. Narendra arranges her marriage with Naresh (Dan Dhanoa), Raj’s (Kader Khan) only son. Just when the marriage rituals are about to be completed, Arun (Mithun Chakraborty) stops the ceremony saying that Radha is already married to him. Professor Peter Fernandes (Ashok Kumar) is presented as the witness and some documents are presented as proof.
Radha disclaims the fact that such a marriage ever happened and says that she had never even seen Arun before, forget getting married to him. Soon, Narendra and Raj convince Radha to sign a divorce petition to annul the marriage so that she could then marry Naresh. Radha signs it. Post some briefing by Arun behind closed doors, Radha begins to talk differently. She says that she had made a mistake and Arun was indeed her husband. Initially, Arun’s brother Jailor Suraj Prakash (Sunil Dutt) does not accept the alliance between Arun and Radha. But, when the professor intervenes, he relents.
Soon, the professor is kidnapped and killed by the goons. Arun decides to avenge his death. But then, the professor’s wife reveals to Suraj Prakash that Radha and Arun are not really married. When Suraj Prakash confronts his brother, Radha intervenes and tells Arun to reveal the truth. Arun informs his brother and sister-in-law that he had spoken to Radha’s father just before he had died. Radha’s father had told him about the nefarious anti-Indian activities of his brother and his friend and had requested Arun to save Radha’s life and honor before she is compelled to marrying a terrorist. Suraj Prakash is now proud of his brother.
Radha really falls in love with Arun and he, soon, arrests Naresh. Naresh is confined to jail because he did not open up about the terrorist organization he works for. Mahavir (Dharmendra) recognizes him as his sister’s rapist and kills him at night. Raj kills Narendra and tries to ensnare Arun into the murder case. But, Suraj Prakash takes the rap for this and motivates Arun, now, to perform his duty. Arun enlists the permission of the government to get Mahavir released because Raj had attempted to kill Mahavir once. Mahavir is admitted to a mental hospital. But, Raj sees through Arun’s plan and is in waiting to strike. Radha is also admitted in the mental hospital and apparently, Arun comes to meet her. Arun, Radha and Mahavir sing this song at this time.
Song –Tana tan tan:
Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and Majrooh Sultanpuri have been credited with the music and lyrics.
This is a hilarious song, with funny lyrics, with a little parodized feel.
Video – Tana tan tan:
The cinematography is by V Durga Prasad. Dance choreography is by Saroj Khan.
The video opens with Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi touching each other, lovingly. Dharmendra looks on. The lead pair begins to dance. Even Puneet Issar begins to dance. The lead pair runs to Dharmendra to welcome him into the dance. The actors performing the roles of the doctor and the mental hospital ward boys try to stop Dharmendra from dancing.
Dharmendra pulls the doctor and bites his nose. Sridevi begins to sing the song. Her comic expressions make me love her all the more. Mithun Chakraborty joins her in the song and brings a garland of bells to put it around the neck of the doctor. Does it mean that Mithun Chakraborty will bell the cat?
Anyways, the lead pair finds the doctor in between them and knocks him down in a steady progression. The ward boys pull the lead pair away from each other. But, they come together again. Dharmendra’s typical comic dance is also something to reckon with. In between the lead pair, Dharmendra and Puneet Issar, they beat up the doctor, who runs away!
Kader Khan, Mac Mohan and some other actors appear from nowhere. Post some comic dancing from the lead pair, Dharmendra and Puneet Issar, these actors plan their strategy. Soon, Kader Khan tries to shoot Dharmendra and Mithun Chakraborty having seen it, comes in front of the senior actor.
The main actors create quite a stir among the other actors playing mental patients that there is only chaos in the hospital. The song rises to a crescendo and then the video ends as all the actors, including the miscellaneous ones acting like mental patients, go together to the outside of the mental hospital building.
The playback of this song was sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Suresh Wadkar and Mohammad Aziz and the onscreen performances are by Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty, Dharmendra, Puneet Issar, Kader Khan, Mac Mohan and others.
A typically filmi song, having no cultural influence on it, this is one song that I enjoyed because Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty and Dharmendra have been assigned the voices of one singer each. This is not often true. Thus, this is not a slapdash work like some others. And I am not a fan of Saroj Khan for nothing. She is a fantastic choreographer. There are several elements in this song that makes me love it. The song and the artists are fantastic. The video is watchable for the same.
