Movie – Band Baja Baaraat (2010):

The song, Baari barsi, was featured in the 2010 Yash-Raj Films’ romedy Band Baja Baaraat (Wedding Planners) directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma in the lead.

Fun-loving and street-smart, Bittoo Sharma (Ranveer Singh), gate-crashes a wedding for free food. Shruti Kakkar (Anushka Sharma) confronts him. Shruti is an intelligent, quirky girl and is the assistant of the wedding coordinator. Bittoo acts as if he is one of the video guys and makes a video of her performing this song.

Song – Baari barsi:

Saleem-Suleiman and Amitabh Bhattacharya have been credited for the music and the lyrics of Baari barsi, respectively.

This is a traditional Punjabi folk song.

Video – Baari barsi:

The cinematography is by Aseem Mishra. Dance choreography is by Vaibhavi Merchant.

The video opens with Anushka Sharma kick-starting the Sangeet ceremony in the wedding celebrations, post a cheap dialogue by Ranveer Singh and her fitting reply to it. She requests everyone to participate in the dance. Ranveer Singh snatches the video camera from the videographer and begins to shoot Anushka Sharma, though she tries to avoid him.

A male voice is heard in the background singing the song. But, nobody has been chosen to sing the verses onscreen. What is the point in including somebody’s voice and there is nobody to picturize that portion on? If it is a recorded song, then there must be a shot of someone handling the record player, which has not been shown.

Songs in many of the new movies are picturized in this slapdash manner, which is very disappointing. The song rises to a crescendo and the dance also becomes very vigorous. Ranveer Singh keeps chasing Anushka Sharma. Performing with a lot of energy, Anushka Sharma turns and hits the camera, which appears to fall onto the floor. The video ends there.

Artists:

The playback of this song has been credited to Harshdeep Kaur, Labh Janjua and Salim Merchant. The onscreen performances are by Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh and others.

Cultural Influence:

This is a traditional Punjabi dance number, derived from all the 3 folk dances of that region – Bhangra, Tappe and Gidda. The song and the artists are ok. The video is watchable for the same.
