Only experience and education obtained by 02/20/2019 will be considered. Minimum Requirements for the 0462 Occupational Series at the GS-04 grade level: 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience. Specialized experience may include: a basic understanding of fire control, prevention, or suppression work; fire management dispatch procedures; ability to operate telecommunications systems; knowledge of aviation operations and terminology.
Completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management , civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
A combination of qualifying experience. Minimum Requirements for the 0462 Occupational Series at the GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. Experience must have been related to the work of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: knowledge of fire management operations, dispatch procedures and resources; ability to recognize fire conditions and behavior; knowledge of aviation operations and terminology; ability to operate telecommunications systems.
Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.
A combination of qualifying experience and education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree, which is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-4/5. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS- 4/5. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
