Raga Charukeshi

We have not done a post on a raga, for quite some time, since we were trying to find another Classical Music expert. Recently, we found Shivam Kumar, a classical music teacher and YouTuber. His choice for this week was Raga Charukeshi.

He says, “The specialty of this raga is that it gives us a feeling of devotion and has a unique melody. Raga Charukeshi belongs to the Carnatic Music style. It belongs to the Sampoorna Sampoorna Jaati and has all the 7 notes in aaroha and avaroha. Only Dha and Ni are komal in both aaroha and avaroha. Rest of the notes remains shuddh.”

Aaroha – Sa Re Ga Ma Pa dha ni Sa

Avaroha – Sa ni dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

Nuances:

According to Shivam, this raga is sung during midday, i.e., during the second part of the day. He adds, “The nuances of this raga are not easy to explain in writing. This raga is a mixture of other ragas – like there is a small phrase of Raga Bhairav, Raga Darbari, Raga Nut Bhairav and Raga Nut. The other ragas are mainly called angs or parts in the music.”

He continues, “We know that this is raga is from the Carnatic padhdhati or style. But, there is some confusion among some people or musicians regarding the thaat, vadi and samvadi. Some people say that this raga comes under Mishra Thaat. Others say that the thaat is not defined. However, I feel, according to my training from my Guru Pt. Mahesh Chandra Jain, that it belongs to Charukeshi Thaat. That’s why this raga is said to be the aashraya raga of the thaat. Vadi is Sa and samvadi is Ma. There is a little discrepancy about this as well since some opine just opposite of this.”
