Today is Composer Bappi Lahiri’s birthday. Born Alokesh Bappi Lahiri, he is primarily a veteran composer of Bollywood and Bengali songs. He also sings, acts and produces records. Popular in the 1980s-90s, his most famous compositions include those for Wardat (1981), Disco Dancer (1982), Namak Halaal (1982), Dance Dance (1987), Commando (1988), Sailaab (1990) and Sharaabi (1984). Legendary Singer Kishore Kumar was his maternal uncle. Bappida began to play tabla as a 3-year old child and his parents trained him. One of his contributions to the Indian cinema is the use of synthesized disco music in his compositions. Many lyricists with a highly poetic background insist that Bappi Lahiri’s compositions promote bringing together of just rhyming words and nothing else. There is no depth in the lyrics, according to them. I guess that his works are the predecessors of today’s compositions.
Bollywood and Composer Bappi Lahiri’s Birthday:
Here are some of my favorite Bollywood songs from Bappi Lahiri’s baton:
Pyara ik bangle ho… Aap Ki Khatir (1977)
Mausam hai gaane ka… Suraksha (1979)
Pag ghungroo bandh… Namak Halaal (1982)
Nainon mein sapna… Himmatwala (1983)
De de pyar de… Sharaabi (1984) This song is a takeoff from his presentation of songs sung by a Bangladeshi singer, Runa Laila – Superuna (non-film album).
Yaar bina chain kahan re… Saaheb (1985)
Ghayal ghayal… Guru (1989)
Tamma tamma loge… Thanedaar (1990)
Gutar gutar gutar gutar… Dalaal (1993) This song had created a big hullaballoo when it was released due to the supposed objectionable words and imagery in it. Compared to what is being churned out today this is child’s play! The new songs are being accepted – no questions asked!
Oola la oola la… The Dirty Picture (2011) Bappi Lahiri is one of the singers of this song. The music has been attributed to Vishal-Shekhar. But, the tune of this song is a direct lift from Bappi Lahiri’s own Oi Amma oi Amma from Mawali (1983)!
