Today is Actor Sanjeev Kumar’s death anniversary. Born Harihar Jethalal Jariwala in 1938, Sanjeev Kumar was also known as Hari Bhai. If he had not died in 1985, he would have been 80 years of age, almost my Dad’s. Winner of several accolades and awards, Sanjeev Kumar was one actor who would do justice to any role – as a young protagonist or an old character.
When he died, being a little girl, I had cried my eyes out. For some reason, I felt very close to him and I would fondly call him Uncle. I told Mom that I never met him and he is gone! But then, Mom reminded me that we had met and he had actually played with a tiny me! My parents were in the process of trying my luck as a child artist in the movies. My beloved Sanjeev Kumar Uncle gave Mom a pen and told her to take that up, instead.
Mom was always a writer and gave that proverbial pen to both my sister and me and we have followed Sanjeev Kumar Uncle’s suggestion. Both of us are journalists. Hat’s off to you, Uncle, wherever you are. 🙂
