For all you jazz lovers out there in Indianapolis, Indy Jazz Fest is back once again. The 10-day festival kicks off tomorrow, and will run until September 22nd. Even if jazz isn’t necessarily your thing, this is a great opportunity to expose yourself to new music. And who knows, you may even hear something you like.
We’ll try to highlight as many of the events going on in these next ten days that we can, but think of this as the abridged version of the Indy Jazz Fest itinerary.
- Tributes to Freddie Hubbard
Tomorrow, the Indy Jazz Fest Band featuring Pharez Whitted is playing a free 80th Birthday Tribute to Freddie Hubbard, an American Jazz trumpeter and Indianapolis native. Hubbard played in the bebop, hard bop, and post-bop styles from the 1960’s onward. His influence helped contribute to new perspectives in modern bebop and jazz. The 80th Birthday Tribute takes place at 7:00 pm at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center.
But the Indy Jazz Fest Band isn’t the only one looking to pay tribute to one of the jazz greats. On Friday, September 21st, the Steve Allee Big Band featuring Sean Jones will also be playing a tribute show to Hubbard. But, if you were hoping that this was another free concert, you’re unfortunately out of luck. The show takes place at 8:00 pm at The Cabaret. Tickets start at $40 for a seat in the main dining room.
Jazz In Speedway
Another free concert to look out for during the festival is the Jazz concert at Speedway, presented by the Speedway Chamber of Commerce. This takes place Friday, September 21st at Daredevil Brewing Company, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm.
The bands playing are Farrelly Markiewicz Jazz Quartet and the Bill Lancton / Jimmy Davis Band. Both Gene Markiewicz and Bill Lancton are Indy Jazz Hall of Fame members.
Indy Jazz Fest Block Party
There are so many events to check out these next ten days, but if you’re only planning on going to one, then it should be the Indy Jazz Fest Block Party. This takes place on the last day of the festival, Saturday, September 22nd, and will feature thirteen bands on two stages.
The closing night celebration kicks off at the corner of 54th and College Avenue. The Jazz Kitchen will provide their indoor stage, and one outdoor stage will be set up outside Yats. The music will start at 3:00 pm, and continue until past midnight. If you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, mark this down on your calendar.
Jazz artists playing throughout the closing celebration include Tad Robinson, Charlie Ballantine, Tucker Brothers, Premium Blend, Clint Breeze and the Groove, and many more. Tickets for the Indy Jazz Fest Block Party are $25 in advance, and $30 at the door.
That about does it for our abridged itinerary. There are many more events to look out for during Indy Jazz Fest. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can go to indyjazzfest.net and browse around. There’s plenty of jazz for everyone.
