Today is Singer Poornima’s Birthday. Born Poornima Shreshta, this essentially Bollywood crooner has sung several superhits in many languages. The stalwarts Shankar-Jaikishan introduced her as a child Sushma Shreshta, for the classic hit rendition, Haina bolo bolo… Andaz (1971) with biggies like Mohammad Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur. Another singer Pratibha also sang this song with them. Then, there was no looking back.
Her songs were labeled as raunchy. No doubt there were some very objectionable elements in the songs considering a very middle-class society we had at that time. However, given the kind of songs being churned out today, the ones sung by Poornima were kiddish. I met Poornima at the beginning of my career for a print magazine interview. My sister, who did her interview for the print magazine she was working with at that time, was with me. Poornima turned out to be such a sweet and amiable lady. It is surprising that any celebrity, at the peak of their career, would be so kind to new and naïve journalists. I have only one of her photos that she gave me with her autograph. I am sharing the same here today.
