The Alabama rapper released a video for “No Relations” and his popularity continues to grow.
I had never heard any of YBN Nahmir’s songs so I went in fresh. “No Relations” starts out with a promising vocal sample but goes downhill fast.
The premise of the song is that YBN Nahmir is looking for one night stands with no strings attached. Alright, that’s fine if it’s clever.
The song bypasses innuendo and gets straight to the point: “If it’s quick imma f**k with my shoes on/Early morning, getting dome with the news on.” Those are the first lines of the song. Like, you couldn’t ease it along a little bit first? You just had to jump in full throttle?
So there’s not much wordplay going on and the song isn’t about anything especially important. What about the video? Well, I have bad news.
The video looks like an SNL parody. YBN Mirror is on a yacht with attractive, scantily-clad women who are definitely several years older than him. It really plays like a comedy sketch.
It’s not like YBN Nahmir invented vapid hip-hop. Even if the song is shallow and the video is cliche, I could give it a pass if it bops.
It doesn’t. Not in my opinion anyway.
My opinion, however, isn’t that important. Unbeknownst to me, YBN Nahmir has been blowing up over the last year. To be honest, I saw his name and just ignored it, figuring that such a young rapper couldn’t be making very interesting music. I need to learn to trust my instincts.
Anyway, if you’re a fan of the young man you don’t have to worry about what I say. YBN Nahmir is racking up views and his popularity is growing. There’s still plenty of time for him to develop and make more interesting music.
I’ll check back in later.
