Among Toto’s popular songs, this is a keyboard rich song of desire and disappointment. The urban setting of the video helps audiences to understand the world of the 1980s, and the idea of the song- – not that it’s complicated. The drumming and guitar blend in unusual ways to make a unique soundscape over which the lead singer’s tenor sings in notes both smooth and aggrieved about the title woman.

Perhaps arguably the most beautiful breakup song ever, the song is still moving listeners 36 years after its release. The early 1980s were a heady time for pop music of all kinds. While alternative music had its own developments, soft rock and pop had a trend of heavily stylized ballads that almost helped the songs transcend their inherent sentimentality.

“I Won’t Hold You Back” is a song in which the narrator reminisces about a love that has had to end, and now he wishes his former beloved well as she moves on with her life. The key changes and gentle up and down rhythms keep up an interesting dynamic in the song. At one point, there is a guitar and French horn solo that blows away listeners. It might take a couple of spins to catch it, but it is there, and it is enjoyable, whether soft rock is your thing or not.
