First Friday is coming up once more, and it looks like for the month of July, there’ll be plenty of concerts and events to choose from. It can be a little overwhelming to have so many options and no idea which one to choose.
Luckily, we’ve combed through the selection of available concerts and activities for this Friday, July 6th. We’ll cover our top picks, and be sure to highlight all of the free options for those on a budget.
First Friday Food Truck Festival
If you’re a lover of trucks that dish out delicious food, then I’m sure the header up above already caught your attention. While the First Friday Food Truck Festival isn’t quite free, its five dollar entry fee is modest enough. Also, as a bonus incentive for families, children age five and younger get in for free.
This is an all-ages event that will take place at the Old National Center parking lot downtown. Over 30 of Indy’s best food trucks will be there, including Pierogi Love Indy, Ali Baba’s, The Flying Cupcake, and Caplinger’s Fresh Catch.
The Food Truck Festival is also bringing live music to the event with the help of Sam Ash Music Stores. Musicians of all ages from Sam Ash will play on the Sam Ash Stage, with exclusive performances from Ash Rock music students.
The First Friday Food Truck Festival starts at 5:00 pm this Friday, July 6th outside the Old National Center. Follow the smells once you get downtown, and you’re sure to get there.
If there’s one thing that always gets people out and listening to live music, it’s a free concert, and First Fridays are full of them. In Indianapolis, there isn’t a better place in my opinion to go to for First Friday than Fountain Square. You can really get the most bang for your nonexistent buck there.
- The Hi-Fi
Let’s be honest, The Hi-Fi is one of the best venues in Indianapolis. It consistently brings in high-quality acts, has a great atmosphere, and is located in the heart of Indy’s most musical neighborhood.
This First Friday, The Hi-Fi brings The Social Animals and Carson Mchone to their stage. The Social Animals are an indie rock group from Duluth, Minnesota, and a full-time, van-living band. They sound pretty cool. Also one of them has a big red beard. So check them out. Doors to the Hi-Fi open at 6:30 pm.
- The Pioneer
Just down the street from The Hi-Fi, the Pioneer will also be opening their doors for a free concert. There, The Door Jams will hit the stage with Naptown Soul Club DJs Antonio Leiriao and DJ Chase.
The Door Jams are the latest project of Ron Matellic, who was a former member of the bands Sir Winston and the Commons, J. Rider, and Anonymous. If you’re up for a late night, the music at the Pioneer kicks off at 10:00 pm.
- Square Cat Vinyl
Right across from the Hi-Fi, Square Cat Vinyl is having their own First Friday celebration with the help of Flat 12 Bierwerks. Musical guests include Desert Planet and Chemical Envy.
While the music plays, Flat 12 beer samples will be available for those of drinking age. Doors to Square Cat open at 8:00 pm, and the music starts at 9:00 pm.
Art At The Market
The Indianapolis City Market is one of the newest venues to hit on First Fridays. City Market merchants are staying open late this Friday, so be sure to stick around and browse to your hearts’ content. There will also be plenty of art from local artists, live music, food, and more. The event is free, family friendly, and open to the public. Of course, for those of drinking age, the Tomlinson Tap Room will be available for anyone who wants to take a load off with a nice craft beer.
While there are a myriad of options to take advantage of this First Friday, you’ll still have to choose how to spend yours. Make sure that choice is worth it, and don’t forget to have a good time.
