For a long time, I have been searching for some classical expert, who could highlight information on Adbhuta Rasa. The difficulty was that I had been finding only Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancers, who had fewer chances to express this rasa in their dances. Recently, I had the good fortune to find the contact of Dr. Rekha Raju, a Mohiniattam dancer. In Mohiniattam and Kathakali, the dancer has to get overly dramatic and express emotions that are usually not encountered in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak.
This is what Dr. Rekha Raju had to say about Adbhuta Rasa, “Adbhuta or awe is depicted in classical dance at various parameters, looking at something gigantic, or beauty of nature causes wonder, the Vishwarupam of Lord Vishnu during the Mahabharata was Adbhuta to Arjuna, when Krishna opened his mouth to show the whole world in his mouth was awe to Yashoda, etc., and is a famous rasa in Natyam.”
Short Attention Span and Adbhuta Rasa: First of all classical dance though cannot be understood by all but can be loved and visualized by everyone, because it carries all aspects of life in a trifle exaggerated format, a good artiste can hold the audience whatever short duration he or she is on stage, the audience needs to be kept occupied not just through the naked eye but also through the inner feeling.
Relation to Real Life: Adbhuta rasa though is one of the important rasas of classical dance, it’s commonly used in our day to day lives too, as dance is a depiction of life and our traditions, it brings us closer to our culture and these rasas also are a part of our culture, nature itself is so beautiful and all of us always wonder how God created this beautiful world, the most wondrous thing is the womb of a mother, who gives birth causes creation. What more super wonderful thing can it be other than motherhood!
Astrology and Adbhuta Rasa: Shweta Bhardwaj, Certified Astrologer and Numerologist told us about the rasa’s connection to astrology. She said, “Adbhuta Rasa is governed by Jupiter. Jupiter is massive and full of surprises. Jupiter is attractive. Jupiter is ‘Adbhuta’. As Jupiter has high gravitational force, it attracts nearby celestial objects. A person with strong
Jupiter is full of wisdom and knowledge that attracts everyone. Teachers and educational experts are expected to have strong Jupiter. Jupiter is also said to be the Guru. The Adbhuta Bhava can be controlled by Yellow Sapphire.
