Indy Pop Con 2018 Preview

This weekend Indy Pop Con comes once again to Indianapolis, less than two months in the wake of the Indiana Comic Con in April. To the inexperienced con-goer, there may seem like little distinction between the two.

The key difference to keep in mind is one of specificity. There are a lot of conventions out there for niche genres. Comic Con is for comics and comic-related fun. Pop Con is for basically anything else you can think of that falls under the umbrella of pop culture. There are a wide variety of fandoms out there. But no matter what you’re a fan of – from podcasts, television and video games, to manga, anime, and yes, comics too – you’ll find something to love at Indy Pop Con.

Putting the Creators First

If there is a unifying theme to Indy Pop Con, it’s the emphasis on the creators. With the rise of self-publishing, and the ease of sharing art on the internet, creators have more freedom now than ever. And conventions are just another tool that they can use to reach out to their fans, and find new ones.

During Indy Pop Con, the Exhibition Hall will be filled with dozens and dozens of artists, vendors, and other creators. There’ll be podcasters, YouTube stars, cosplayers, gamers, and more. Be sure to engage with any creator whose work you find interesting, compelling, or fun. It may seem like a small gesture, but even a quick, “Hey, I really like this” can go a long way.

Celebrities & Special Guests

Every year, Indy Pop Con brings in celebrity guests to speak on panels, sign photographs and other memorabilia, and take pictures with fans. This year’s lineup should be especially promising for fans of Game of Thrones. Both Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) are booked to appear. Ross Mullan (White Walker) will also be there.

Marvel fans will be pleased to learn that Pom Klementieff (Mantis, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Simmons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will be attending.

Other celebrities include Tara Reid (Sharknado, American Pie), Jason Faunt (Power Rangers Time Force), and Levar Burton (Star Trek: TNG, Reading Rainbow).
