Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri’s Death Anniversary

Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri breathed his last on this day in 2000. If this sad event had not occurred, he would have been 98 today. Majrooh Sahab was an Urdu poet par excellence. This is an understatement. He belonged to the Progressive Writers’ Movement. He bagged the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. No wonder I am crazy about his creations. I had been in touch with his daughter-in-law for an interview with him. Unfortunately, he was ill at that time and before some arrangement could be made, he expired.

Hasrat thi unse milneki,

Magar, zindagi daga de gayi!

Bollywood and Majrooh Sahab: These are just some of my favorite Bollywood songs penned by Majrooh Sahab:

Chahunga main tujhe… Dosti (1964) He won the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for this song.

Bin tere Sanam… Yara Dildara (1991)

Jawan ho yaron… Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992) This song always motivates me.

Chhupne wale samne aa… Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957)

Bade hain dil ke kale… Dil Deke Dekho (1959)

Aanchal mein saja lena kaliyan… Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon (1963)

O haseena zulfonwali… Teesri Manzil (1966)

Aaja Piya tohe pyar doon… Baharon Ke Sapne (1967)

Che khush nazare… Pyar Ka Mausam (1969)

Chadhti jawani meri… Caravan (1971)
