Brinda Roy Chowdhury sings Raga Shudh-Kalyan

Today’s expert is Brinda Roy Chowdhury and she has selected Raga Shudh-Kalyan for this week. She has this to say about the raga, “This Raga belongs to Thaat Kalyan. It has Aaroh of Raga Bhoopali and Avroh of Raga Yaman. And thus sometimes it is also called Raga Bhoop-Kalyan. However, Raga Shudh-Kalyan is the most popular name for it. The Raga permits phrases to culminate only on Sa, Re, Ga and Pa as nyasa swaras (resting points). This Raga has got a very close resemblance with Raga Bhoopali and should be sung very carefully to avoid the confusion. The essence of the 2 ragas makes it extremely unique and beautiful to listen to. The aaroh is Sa, Re, Ga, Pa, Ni, Dha, Sa and avroh is Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa, Ma (teevra), Ga, Re, Ga, Re, Sa. Time to sing this raga is from 6 to 9 PM.”

Bollywood and Raga Shudh-Kalyan: Some famous Bollywood songs based on Raga Shudh-Kalyan are:

Chaand phir nikla… Paying Guest (1957)

Jahan dal dal par sone ki… Sikander-e-Azam (1965)

Meri mohabbat jawan rahegi… Janwar (1965)

Rasik Balma… Chori Chori (1956)

  1. Wonderful insight. There’s so much to know about the Ragas. And we know so little. Once again the joint effort of Gayatri Rao and Brinda RoyChoudhury has enlightened us.
Brinda’s voice is melodious as ever.
