Singer S Janaki’s Birthday

Born Sistla Janaki on this day 80 years ago, Playback Singer S Janaki is my favorite South Indian singer. She has not only done playback singing, but she has also occasionally composed music as well. She has recorded 48000 songs in 17 languages; Indian as well as Japanese and German. She began her career in 1957 and retired last year October. She has won several accolades and awards. She is called the Nightingale of South India and has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore. She refused to accept Padma Bhushan in 2013 saying that she had been recognized for her contribution too late and artists from down South are not regularly recognized by the Indian government.
