Tha tha kar ke – Neeraj/Earl/Anwesha/Akriti/Indie – Ashish Pandit | Golmaal Returns (2008)

Movie: This song appeared in 2008 Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision’s super-hit comic caper Golmaal Returns directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Dhillin Mehta. The movie starred Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley, Anjana Sukhani, etc.

Ekta (Kareena Kapoor) is addicted to Indian soaps on TV. She lives with her husband Gopal (Ajay Devgn), his sister Esha (Amrita Arora) and her mute brother Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor). Lucky loves a deaf girl Daisy (Anjana Sukhani). One night, Gopal is returning from his office and saves a beautiful girl Meera (Celina Jaitley) from some goons. As they cannot return home, they have to spend the night in a yacht belonging to Gopal’s friend. When Gopal returns home the next morning, overtly suspicious Ekta suspects him of having an affair with his secretary. He knows that it is difficult to convince her. So, he invents a story of having spent the night with a fictitious friend Anthony Gonzalves.

Ekta does not believe his story and writes to Anthony requesting him to meet her, to confirm Gopal’s story. Knowing the fact that Ekta has written to Anthony, Gopal catches hold of and convinces an interview candidate Lakshman Prasad (Shreyas Talpade), who visits his office; to play the role of Anthony for convincing Ekta that Gopal is not disloyal to her. Lakshman is actually Meera’s boyfriend. But, Gopal does not know about the fact. Lakshman also agrees to help Gopal and in return, it is decided that he gets the job for which he had applied. Things go in Gopal’s favor for some time.

Everything goes haywire when a real Anthony is present at the address which Gopal had given offhand! On the other hand, Gopal gets to know that a dead body was found at the place where he had saved Meera. The case goes to Esha’s boyfriend Police Officer Madhav (Arshad Warsi). Madhav and Gopal do not see eye to eye. Madhav finds out that Gopal was absent from home on the murder night and the dead man turns out to be Gopal’s colleague. The officer gleefully enjoys his investigation and continues to torture Gopal, all hilariously. Madhav also finds out Lakshman’s real identity and gives a limited number of days to Gopal to find Meera to prove that he is not the murderer. Ekta throws Gopal out of the house until that time. Gopal, Lucky and Lakshman stay in the vast garden of Gopal’s home. Madhav comes to Gopal’s home to meet his sister that night to annoy Gopal and they all sing this song in a dream sequence.

Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Sameer and the music was composed by Ashish Pandit.

The gist of the song is, “Move over. Don’t rub me from the wrong side. Otherwise, there will be riots around here.”

Video: Cinematography is by Natrajan Subramaniam.

The video opens with some blasts happening on the streets and people running helter-skelter. Arshad Warsi is seen running ahead of one of the blasts with Amrita Arora. Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade appear before a blast each. Ajay Devgn is seen moving on an erect motorbike in a reclining position.

The song has already begun in chorus in the background. Everybody gathers around Ajay Devgn, still in a reclining position on his bike. The bike jumps (?!?) and throws him on the ground in a standing position! The dance choreographer is a stunt director as well, I suppose. The moment Ajay lands on the ground several men are thrown away from the place, due to the force of his landing!

Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor begin to dance and a male voice is heard singing in the background with Ajay Devgn lip-syncing. Arshad Warsi and Amrita Arora also begin to sing and dance. Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade with some men shoot at Arshad Warsi, Amrita Arora and others.

The people at the receiving end duck and the bullets reach the background to blast in a large explosion. It doesn’t make sense. The male singers are trying to convince the females to accept their love. At the same time, 2 groups have been formed and they are trying to convince each other about something else altogether.

Stuffing quite a few concepts in one song can have a very bad end-result. The whole effect of the song is a love story within a gang war. The concept may sound good for a whole movie. But, for a single song, the lyricist should restrict themselves to one concept. 2 cars coming from Arshad Warsi’s side are blasted by Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade.

Before this song, Arshad Warsi is seen trying to vex Ajay Devgn. If the song had restricted itself to that concept, the song would have been something to write home about. And the concept would have been something different than being churned out in today’s age. As Arshad Warsi and Amrita Arora run toward a red convertible, the video mutes.

We don’t know how the song ends. The video ends as Arshad Warsi takes off with Amrita Arora in the red convertible.

Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Neeraj Shridhar, Anwesha Datta Gupta, Akriti Kakkar, Indie and Earl Edgar D’Souza and the onscreen performances are by Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora.

Cultural Influence: There is not much cultural influence on this typically filmi song. The song and the artists are ok. The video is watchable for the same.
