After both a long hiatus from Twitter and the public eye in general, Kanye West is back and is letting everyone know exactly what he’s thinking, both personally and professionally.
The rapper announced today on Twitter that he’s releasing two albums – one on his own and one with Kid Cudi. In a series of tweets he said, “my album is 7 songs,” “June 1st,” “me and Cudi album June 8th.” He also announced the duo’s group name, Kids See Ghost. Maybe a nod to his own children, North, Saint, or young babe Chicago?
Although Mr. West hasn’t been seen or heard in the public eye lately, rumors have swirled that he’s been recording in remote Jackson Hole, Wyoming over the past year. He hasn’t released a solo album since 2016’s Life of Pablo, but has been a guest on tracks from Kylie Jenner’s ex Tyga, Mary J. Blige, and Toronto native Drake. He even worked on ‘it’ rap group of the moment Migos’ album earlier this year.
But none of this is to say he hasn’t been busy in the past year. He launched a kids clothing line called Kids Supply with wife and reality star Kim Kardashian and the couple welcomed their third child via surrogate earlier this year named Chicago. The whole experience, sans his own appearance, was documented on Kardashian’s show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
During his announcement spree today he also announced that his longtime protege Teyana Taylor will release her album on June 22nd and Push T will release his album earlier on May 25th. So it seems that despite his family affairs last year, he’s stayed busy recording for others and himself. It remains to be seen if a tour to support the album will happen. West famously canceled 21 dates of his Life of Pablo tour following a reported mental exhaustion breakdown.
Kanye has also been on Twitter using the platform to write a book in “real time,” which he says is “not a financial opportunity this is an innate need to be expressive.” Not a bad idea, honestly. Here’s some of this most recent thoughts on creativity, expression, and emotions.
“Be here now. Be in the moment. The now is the greatest moment of our lives and it just keeps getting better. The bad parts the boring parts the parts with high anxiety. Embrace every moment for its greatness. This is life. This is the greatest movie we will ever see.”
“let’s be less concerned with ownership of ideas. It is important that ideas see the light of day even if you don’t get the credit for them. Let’s be less concerned with credit awards and external validation.”
If this will actually be turned into a book, sign me up. And if this is any indication of his upcoming album, I think we can all look forward to some actual truth bombs, instead of just inflated egotistical jabber.
