Bhavani Ram Chooses Raga Yaman for this Week

Bhavani Ram sings Raga Yaman.

Today, our Hindustani Classical Music expert Bhavani Ram wants to say the following about her choice for this week Raga Yaman, “Raga Yaman is the most popular among all Hindustani Classical Ragas. It is called the king of ragas. It has charm and uniqueness of its own. It brings out the atmosphere of romance in any kind of composition. For me, Raga Yaman is the most beautiful of all ragas and it makes you feel good as I sing it.”

Nuances: Carnatic Music equivalent of Raga Yaman is Raga Kalyani. The specialty of this raga is that it is sung during the first prahar or part of the night or between 6 PM and 9 PM when the lights are put on. Originally, the name of this raga was Raga Kalyan and it was changed to Raga Yaman during the Moghul rule. Preference for Ni during the aaroh heightens the beauty of this raga. Avaroh has Pa. Ma is teevra and the other swaras are shuddh, in both ascent and descent. Thus, aaroh is Ni, Re, Ga, Ma, Dha, Ni, Sa and avaroh has Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa, Ma, Ga, Re, Sa. The jati is Sampurna, Thaat is Kalyan, Vaadi is Ga and Samvaadi is Ni.
