Next Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day once again, and what better way to spend it than at a bar with plenty to drink, and some great live music. The Hi-Fi in Fountain Square will be bringing in a special musical guest to celebrate the holiday, the appropriately-named fusion of hip hop and bluegrass: Gangstagrass.
Gangstagrass is a band from Brooklyn that started playing their unique blend of rap and bluegrass in 2006. You may recognize their song “Long Hard Times To Come” as the theme song to the FX show “Justified”, which was nominated for an Emmy.
They released their debut album, “Rench Presents: Gangstagrass” in 2007. Since its release, Gangstagrass has put out four additional albums over the years. These include, “Lightning on the Strings, Thunder on the Mic” in 2010, “Rappalaicha” in 2012, and “Broken Hearts and Stolen Money” in 2014. Their most recent album, “American Music”, came out in 2015. Their website states that currently, “Gangstagrass is using live performances to organically develop new material for an album that will further explode the boundaries between genres generally thought to be incompatible”.
Blending rap bars with fiddle and finger-picking banjos somehow seems like the perfect combination in the era of mashups. Gangstagrass is high-energy, and both musically and lyrically talented.
The members of Gangstagrass are Rench (production, guitar, vocals), Landry McMeans (dobro, vocals), Dan Whitener (banjo, vocals), Melody Allegra Berger (fiddle, vocals), R-SON (MC), and Dolio the Sleuth (MC).
The St. Patrick’s Day show with Gangstagrass will also include the musical guest rapper Ace One and Friends. The show starts at 9:00 pm, and doors to The Hi-Fi will open at 8:00 pm. Tickets to the show are thirteen dollars. Make sure to get out and show off your green, and try not to drink too much.
