Preview: Richard Edwards at The Pioneer

On Friday, March 16th, The Pioneer will be bringing several bands from all over to play at their stage in Fountain Square. Those playing will be Richard Edwards (of Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s), High Up (Omaha, NE), and Whispertown (LA).

Richard Edwards

Richard Edwards used to be a part of the band Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. The band put out five studio albums during their run, and even appeared on TV for a live performance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”. Then Edwards struck out on his own for a solo career, and produced his first album “Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset”.

The album marks a critical period during Edwards’ life. He was out of a band, then diagnosed with a rare disease, lost forty pounds, and served with divorce papers. His website’s bio page ends with a note remarking on this. “There is no cryptic moniker behind which this new man hides. There is just Richard Edwards, who isn’t dead or even dead-eyed, who hasn’t disappeared or been delivered. He has emerged”.

You can find out more about Richard Edwards by visiting his website or Facebook page.

High Up

High Up is a gritty, indie soul band from Omaha, Nebraska that released their debut, self-titled album in 2017. The band’s sophomore release, “You Are Here” just came out last month.

At the heart of High Up is the relationship between two sisters, Christine and Orenda Fink. At a difficult point in their lives, the sisters came together. Their Facebook profile goes into more detail. “After much discussion, they decided to start High up, a collaboration mixing elements of indie, punk and soul that showcased Christine’s powerful vocals and Orenda’s seasoned songwriting”.

High Up consists of Christine Fink, Orenda Fink, Josh Soto, Todd Fink, and Matt Focht. You can listen to High Up on Bandcamp. For more information, you can find them on Facebook.

Whispertown is the indie folk rock project of Morgan Nagler of Los Angeles, California. Formerly known as Whispertown 2000, they have toured with Bright Eyes, She & Him, M. Ward, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, and more.

Whispertown 2000 released its debut album, “Livin’ in a Dream” in 2006, followed by “Swim” in 2008. After they dropped the ‘2000’, the newly-christened Whispertown released “Parallel” in 2012. 2017 saw the release of Whispertown’s most recent album, “I’m A Man”.

You can learn more about Whispertown by visiting their website. You can also find Whispertown on Facebook.

The show with Richard Edwards, High Up, and Whispertown starts at 10:00 pm at The Pioneer. Tickets are eight dollars in advance, and ten at the door.
