Today, I have selected some really beautiful duets of Mohammad Rafi Sahab and Asha Bhonsle. The vocal chemistry between them was just fantastic. Ashaji’s Nanhe munne bachche… Boot Polish (1954) with Rafi Sahab gave her fame. She got more recognition with her duets with Rafi Sahab for Naya Daur (1957). O P Nayyar would often use this pair of singers together for his compositions.
Initially, she thought that she would not be able to do justice to the westernized tune in their duet Aaja aaja… Teesri Manzil (1966). When she took it as a challenge, the result was clear in late Shammi Kapoor’s quote, “If I did not have Mohammad Rafi to sing for me, I would have got Asha Bhonsle to do the job”. They complimented each other’s voices.
Bollywood Says: Some of my favorite songs by this pair of singers are:
Dekho logon yeh kaisa zamana… Humse Badhkar Kaun (1981)
Megha re bole… Dil Deke Dekho (1959)
Ude jab jab zulfen teri… Naya Daur (1957)
Leke pehla pehla pyar… CID (1956)
Yeh ladka haye Allah… Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (1977)
Dhal gaya din… Humjoli (1970)
Aaja panchi akela hai… Nau Do Gyarah (1957)
Dil use do jo jaan de de… Andaz (1971)
Isharon isharon mein dil… Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)
Bahut shukriya badi meherbani… Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962)
