Lyricist Sameer Anjaan completed 60 years last Saturday. 2016 saw him making it to the Guinness World Records as the writer of the most movie songs. He is not called the song-a-minute lyricist, for nothing. When I asked him about it, he replied, “It is an epithet the media gave me for the speed with which I write songs.”

Son of famous Hindi lyricist Lalji Pandey or Anjaan, Sameerji has bagged 3 Filmfare Awards. Sameerji’s real name is Shitala Pandey and the commonly used nickname is Rajan. He is an M.Com and started out to be a bank officer. But, he soon realized that he was born to be a songwriter, which he prefers to call himself. When I had interviewed him, he regretted that he did not get projects like Pyasa (1957). So, even if he wanted he could not put in too many poetic verses.

Author and Journalist Derek Bose wrote his biography Sameer – A Way with Words. I am proud to say, Sameerji personally gave me an autographed copy of this book. 🙂
