Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Birthday

Actor-Director-Writer-Producer, Ashutosh Gowarikar is well-known for directing lavishly treated movies set on large canvases. He began his Bollywood career working as an actor in movies like Holi (1984). Ashutosh Gowarikar told me about his earlier days in Bollywood in an exclusive interview for a print magazine. He had played Bhagyashree’s love interest in the teleserial Kachchi Dhoop (1987). Rajshri’s Sooraj Barjatiya liked this pair and wanted to make Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) with them. But, the director soon realized that Ashutosh Gowarikar’s built was such that he could just pick up Bhagyashree and leave. Sooraj Barjatiya wanted a soft lover and not a rough and tough guy for his movie. Thus, he selected Salman Khan instead. I wonder if Ashutosh Gowarikar had done MPK, then how his Bollywood career would have turned out.

He played important roles in the teleserials like Circus (1989) and CID (1998). Post that; he did some movies like Naam (1986), Chamatkar (1992) and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993). He debuted as a director with Pehla Nasha (1993). Soon enough, he did Baazi (1995) with Aamir Khan. Some movies he has directed are Lagaan (2001), Swades (2004), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), What’s Your Raashee? (2009), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) and Mohenjo Daro (2016). He also recently returned to lead the cast in the Priyanka Chopra-produced dramedy Ventilator (2016).
