Actor Deepti Naval celebrated her 67th birthday last Saturday. She is not just an actor but also a writer, director, painter and photographer. Most of her work has been in the sector of art cinema. She has wooed the critics with close to life characters and sensitive portrayal of the changed role of women in India. She was brought up in New York City since her father was a professor in the City University there.
She debuted with Junoon (1978) and soon, bagged the lead role in Ek Baar Phir (1980). Her notable roles include in Kamla (1984) and Ankahee (1985) in the sector of parallel cinema. Beginning with Chashm-e-Baddoor (1981), her regular co-star was late Farooq Sheikh. They also did Saath Saath (1982), Kissi Se Na Kehna (1983), Katha (1983) and Rang Birangi (1983). They were again brought together 3 decades later in Tell Me O Kkhuda (2011). Farooq Sheikh expired after doing Listen… Amaya (2013) with her. Deepti Naval’s contribution to movies was recognized in 2007 when she was honored at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.
Deepti Naval has also acted in some telefilms and serials like Sauda (1992), Tanaav (1994) and Muqammal (2003). She was also seen in Mukti Bandhan (2011). More recently, she debuted in the theater with Ek Mulaqaat (2015). In this poetic stage show, she performed the role of Amrita Pritam, the famous Punjabi writer.
