Today is Javed Akhtar’s birthday. He is not only a lyricist but also a poet and screenwriter. In the 1970s, he had worked with Salim Khan (Salman Khan’s father) as a partner in writing scripts for movies like Sholey (1975). They broke up in the 1980s. A Padma Shri Awardee (1999), he has also received Padma Bhushan (2007), Sahitya Akademi Award and 5 National Film Awards.

His father was a famous Bollywood songwriter and Urdu poet called Jan Nisar Akhtar. His mother Safia was a singer, writer and teacher. His grandfather Muztar Khairabadi was a poet. Javed Akhtar’s great-grandfather Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi was an Islamic Scholar and had participated in the 1857 uprising or the First Indian Independence Movement.

Javed Akhtar’s father initially named him as Jadoo, which comes from a line of his own poem – Lamha lamha kisi jadoo ka fasana hoga. Jadoo was then changed to Javed, which was the nearest word to it.
