Nineteen fifty six – Manna/Lata – Shankar-Jaikishan | Anari (1959)

Movie: This song appeared in 1959 L B Films’ socio-romantic drama Anari (An Innocent Person) directed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by L B Lachman. The movie starred late Raj Kapoor, late Nutan, late Motilal, late Lalita Pawar, Shubha Khote, etc.

Raj Kumar (Raj Kapoor) is honest handsome, intelligent and young. He is also a painter. But, he cannot make ends meet with his works. He is also not able to pay rent to his kind-hearted but overtly stern landlady Mrs. D’sa (Lalita Pawar). Once, Raj finds a wallet containing a lot of money and returns it to the rightful owner Mr. Ramnath (Motilal). Ramnath likes Raj’s honesty and employs him in his office as a clerk. Raj works hard and gets a good name for his job. Within one month he gets promoted. Raj meets Ramnath’s maidservant Asha (Nutan) as well and both fall in love soon.

On the salary day, Raj buys a beautiful hat for Mrs. D’sa and takes her to a high-end hotel for dinner. It is at that time that this song-and-dance sequence is performed by a group of dancers. Raj is pulled into the dance by one of the female dancers.

Song: The lyrics of this song were written by Shailendra and the music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

The song talks about the changes happening in the world in the late 1950s.

Video: Cinematography is by Jaywant Pathare. Dance Choreography is by Satyanarayan.

The video opens with a few dancers jumping gracefully in tune with the music, which has already begun. They begin the proper dance, now. One of the female dancers compels Raj Kapoor to join the dancers. Lalita Pawar also forces him to join them.

The song begins in the background and Helen is seen wearing different dresses, which represent the year that is being mentioned. Helen begins to sing as she dances. After Lalita Pawar insists again, Raj Kapoor joins the dancers in the song, in a funny manner.

Helen approaches him and says, “Hello,” and he calls his mother in fright! He takes over singing some of the last few lines of the song. Soon, Helen stands on a small swing and is lifted to the roof on it. The song peters out and the video ends there.

Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar and the onscreen performances are by Helen, Raj Kapoor, Lalita Pawar and others.

Cultural Influence: There is a lot of influence of the Western Culture in this song-and-dance sequence. The song and the artists are very good. The video is watchable for the same.
