The lead characters – Rakesh aka Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan) and Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt) meet for the first time at Kavya’s maternal uncle’s place. Kavya, an Ambala resident, is at his place to earn enough money for buying a designer bridal dress for her wedding. Kavya’s uncle is Humpty’s exam paper corrector. Humpty bribes them and Kavya promises that he will get pass marks. Humpty falls in love with her and begins chasing her with his friends Poplu (Sahil Vaid) and Shonty (Gaurav Pandey). But, she just befriends them.
Soon, Humpty gets to know that Kavya’s friend Gurpreet (Guncha Narula) was being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend Bhanu (Jimmy Varyani), after secretly filming the time they were intimate. Humpty victimizes Bhanu and recovers the money, which he had blackmailed Gurpreet into giving him. The total amount that he recovers from Bhanu is much more than the amount they needed to return to Gurpreet. Humpty decides to give the extra money to Kavya, which she rejects since she did not like the way they had earned the money.
Due to the adventures that they had, Kavya also falls in love with Humpty and they celebrate Gurpreet’s marriage with a good boy. Kavya and Humpty go to bed together the night before she is to leave for Ambala. Humpty wants to marry her. But, she tells him that she would not go against her father. Her father wants her to marry an NRI. Humpty’s father has also contributed toward the fund for buying Kavya’s dress. She accepts the money, without wanting to, and leaves Delhi. But, she buys Humpty’s father’s dream car as a gift for them with the money they had arranged. Humpty decides to find Kavya and marry her. He sets out for Ambala.
When Kavya comes back home, her sister Swati (Mahnaz Damania) and other ladies in her family realize that she has changed. Kavya’s father (Ashutosh Rana) believes in arranged marriages since his elder divorcee daughter Swati’s love marriage turned out to be a disaster. Kavya’s father has been blaming his elder daughter for the disaster and keeps taunting her. Kavya’s father immediately rejects Humpty’s proposal and gets him beaten up. He and his friends are thrown into a truck going back to Delhi. Humpty and his friends return to Ambala with more determination.
When Humpty repeatedly tries to persuade Kavya’s father to let them marry, he allows Humpty to stay at their house and tells him to find flaws in the NRI bridegroom Angad (Sidharth Shukla) within 5 days. Humpty and his friends try to find the reason due to which Angad’s claim to be Kavya’s groom can be invalidated. But, they are not very successful. Angad requests Kavya to go for dinner with him. Though Kavya requests Humpty to do something about it, he is not in a position to do anything. During the dinner in a Dhaba, Kavya provokes some street-side Romeos to tease her and sends a text message to Humpty about being teased by them because Angad insists that they eat and leave. Humpty arrives with his friends and beats up the goons. The police are called in and the goons are arrested. Kavya’s father is also informed and he requests the police to let go of Humpty and his friends.
Kavya’s father gets Humpty and his friends beaten up and shows them the road back to Delhi. Kavya wears a locally made bridal dress and tells her father that local is best for her. He realizes that Humpty would be the best for his daughter and visits Delhi to get them married. The movie ends at this time and this song appears during the end titles.
