Are de de de de zara – Kishore/Mahendra – Kalyanji-Anandji – Vinod/Shatrughan | Bombay 405 Miles (1980)

Movie: This song appeared in 1980 Dynamo International’s action movie Bombay 405 Miles directed and produced by Brij. The movie starred late Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, etc.

2 convicts Kishan (Shatrughan Sinha) and Kanhaiya (Vinod Khanna) are ordered away from their cities Delhi and Kolkata, for several years. While traveling to Bombay (Mumbai now), they meet each other and swindle a pawnbroker, by forgery. Radha (Zeenat Aman) snatches away the money, as they bring it out of the bank. Kishan and Kanhaiya try to convince her to join them in conning people in Mumbai. They sing this song at this time.

Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by late Indeewar and the music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The gist of the song is, “Give us your consent to stay with us. We need each other. We are not complete without you. You are incomplete without us. If you give us your consent to be with us, we will fulfill every condition that you put forward.”

Video: Cinematography is by Anwar Siraj. Dance choreography is by Surya Kumar.

The video opens with both Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha stopping Zeenat Aman from going away with a rope. They also begin the song and follow her as she tucks the money she has snatched from them inside her shirt. The 2 male actors wrap the rope around her. She tries to be patient. She pulls the rope from them and disentangles herself from it.

The 2 leading men begin to dance around her. As she moves forward, they make faces and gestures as if they would hit her from behind. When she turns back to them, they fold their hands in front of her. She runs away from them and hires 2 bystanders to get rid of them for her. The leading men are about to hit them and the goons fish out knives to fight them.

In the next shot, the goons are seen lying beaten up on a handcart, which is being pushed by the leading men. Zeenat Aman sees this and moves away. The leading men try to pull Zeenat Aman toward themselves by holding one arm each on either side of her. She again moves away with so much force that the men are propelled toward each other and they embrace each other!

Zeenat Aman shakes a thumb in front of them, signaling that their efforts had gone waste. She also smiles triumphantly. She goes to the bus stand to catch a bus to Mumbai. The 2 men follow her and get into the moving bus in which she is sitting. They also continue the song. They dance all along, inside the bus.

She pushes them away and all the other passengers push them out of the bus. They get stranded in the wilderness. The song peters out and the video ends as the men see a goods train moving on the nearby tracks.
