Late Ramanand Sagar’s Birthday


Padma Shri late Ramanand Sagar was born on this day in 1917. Born Chandramouli Chopra, he had written, produced and directed several Bollywood movies. But, he is more famous for making the TV series Ramayan, based on the Hindu epic of the same name. The series went on for too many episodes (78) and was ridiculed as Ramayawn for continuing for so long, by the media. He had bagged a gold medal for Sanskrit and Persian from the University of Punjab (1942). He did menial jobs like truck cleaning, peon, soap vendor, etc. while studying for his degree. He also edited the newspaper Daily Milap. He was the author of several short stories, novels, poetry, plays, etc. His pennames were Ramanand Chopra, Ramanand Bedi and Ramanand Kashmiri. He had debuted in Bollywood as a story, screenplay writer for Barsaat (1949).
