Late Actor Rajesh Khanna, father of Twinkle Khanna was born on this day 75 years ago. He was born Jatin Khanna and used to be called Kaka (meaning baby-faced boy in Punjabi) by his friends and wife Dimple Kapadia (married in 1973 till his death in 2012). He was an Indian actor, movie producer and politician, well-known for his work in Bollywood. He was often referred to as the first superstar and the original superstar of Bollywood. He gave 15 solo hits back to back from 1969 to 1971. This record has not been broken as yet.
He debuted as the leading man with Aakhri Khat (1966). He won 3 Filmfare Best Actor Awards and 4 BFJA Awards for the Best Actor in his lifetime. He received Filmfare Special Award (1991) and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2005), as well. He became the highest paid actor between 1970 and 1987. This tag was shared by Amitabh Bachchan with him from 1980 to 1987.
Rajesh Khanna served as a Lok Sabha member (Indian National Congress, New Delhi, 1992 to 1996). He had 2 daughters from his marriage with Dimple Kapadia – Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna. He expired on July 18, 2012 and was posthumously conferred with Padma Bhushan. He was also bestowed with the title of The First Superstar if Indian Cinema at the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards, posthumously. A postal stamp has been launched in his name. He has also been honored with a statue in his likeness and a road was also given his name, post his death.
