On Friday, January 12th, The Pioneer down in Fountain Square will be hosting a concert featuring two local Indianapolis bands, and one based out of Louisville, Kentucky. The acts range from solo acoustic to strange and psychedelic rock. Crescent Ulmer will be there, as well as Frederick the Younger, and Hales Corner.
Crescent Ulmer is a singer and songwriter from Indianapolis. Ulmer came out with the debut EP “Living Room Demos” in 2010. Crescent Ulmer’s most recent album, “Creature Comforts”, came out in 2014. According to Ulmer’s website’s bio page “Crescent’s first album…was funded by a successful crowdfunding campaign after being voted Bloomington, Indiana’s best songwriter in 2014”. Ulmer writes brutally honest folk songs with catchy guitar lines and beautifully sung vocals.
Frederick the Younger
Frederick the Younger is a psych-pop and indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. The band is made up of Jenni Cochran (vocals, keyboard), Aaron Craker (guitar, keys, vocals), John Barrera (guitar), Matt Kohorst (bass), and Dave Givan (drums). Frederick the Younger released their first EP “You Don’t Lie” in 2015. Since then, they’ve averaged an album per year with the 2016 release of “Warm Front”, and 2017’s “Human Child”. One of the most recognizable aspects of Frederick the Younger is Jenni Cochran’s vocals, which waver and float above the psychedelic soundscape.
Hales Corner is an indie rock band from Indianapolis that formed in 2015. The band released their first EP “Garden View” in 2016, and this past year released their single “Whores”. Their music is often low-key, with somewhat melancholy vocals and more optimistic guitar lines. Hales corner consists of Caleb Adams (guitar), Wesley Cook (vocals, guitar, bass, organ), and Ben Craig (drums, percussion).
So whether you’re looking for soft and relaxing rock, soulful acoustic, or something more poppy and weird, The Pioneer will have it covered. The show on Friday, January 12th starts at 10:30, and there’s a five dollar cover charge to get in.
