Next Friday marks the first Friday of the new year, and once again, Flat 12 First Fridays at Square Cat Vinyl are back. To kick off the new year right, there will be samples and specials of Flat 12 beers and free live music. The bands to play are Hex Mundi and Knot Brothers.
Hex Mundi is an indie, garage-rock band from Indianapolis with a penchant for all things occult. The band formed in 2014, starting as a husband and wife duo, and since evolving to a full band. Hex Mundi released their debut EP, “Chrysalis EP” in 2015. Since then they have released another, “Colors and Codes” in 2017. Hex Mundi consists of Justin Renner (electric mandolin, vocals), Stephanie Renner (drums), Andrew Roti (bass), and Sam Mosey (guitar, vocals). For a good idea of their sound, think of the more low-key Pixies songs, mix in a touch of the Arctic Monkeys, and add a good dose of psychedelic and surf rock vibes.
The Knot Brothers are a joy to listen to. While I haven’t heard them live, I plan to next week at Square Cat Vinyl. Knot Brothers are an electro-funk, hip-hop-pop duo. Some of their biggest influences include groups like Daft Punk, Chromeo, and Gym Class Heroes. Their songs typically feature heavy bass lines and drum beats, synth accompaniment, distorted funk guitar, and hip-hop lyrics mixed with sung vocals. Their lyrics are usually directed toward partying, girls, drinking, and the occasional existential crisis. Knot Brothers put out their debut EP, “Misadventures” earlier this year. You can give it a listen by visiting their Bandcamp page here.

It’s setting up to be a competitive First Friday in Fountain Square next week, as The Hi-Fi also has some good groups coming to play. I predict myself bouncing around between Square Cat Vinyl and The Hi-Fi, in all honesty. But I definitely don’t want to miss out on seeing either of these two bands play. The show at Square Cat Vinyl starts at 7:00 pm. Hex Mundi takes the stage at 8, and the Knot Brothers at 9. I’ll see you there.
