The Wunderkammer Company is home to Guerrilla Theatre. Located at 3402 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne, Indiana, Wunderkammer hosts the variety show on the first Sunday of each month. Performers of all kinds are welcome at the venue. The broad approach to entertainment is reminiscent of Fort Wayne’s history of theatre and performance that dates back to the middle of the 19th century. The next Guerrilla Theatre will be held Jan. 7, 2018.
All things considered, it should surprise no one that the city that once teemed with theatres, and eventually became the birthplace of television is once again incubating entertainment talent, and is the location of a venue that bills itself as Fort Wayne’s original “safe place” for “any and all types of talent.”
What is Guerrilla Theatre?
Guerrilla Theatre is a Performance Art Theatre housed in the Wunderkammer Company. Once a month, Guerrilla Theatre hosts what probably amounts to a variety show in which area folks with a talent to share showcase their abilities in front of a supportive audience.
So this is not a local version of “The Gong Show” or “Live at the Apollo.” Audiences will not be allowed to disparage acts they aren’t crazy about. This is a safe space. Which means it could be ideal for people who are shy or otherwise need to gain performance experience. Sometimes people need a supportive community in which to develop their talent.
Guerrilla Theatre kicks off 2018
Since its inception in September 2016, Guerrilla Theatre had been held on the last Sunday of each month. With a new year comes a new approach. Starting in January 2018, the group’s hosted performances will be held on the first Sunday of every month. The idea behind the series has not changed.
According to Guerrilla Theatre’s Facebook page, January’s installment could boast anything from comics (of the stand-up variety), flutists, poets, singers, bassoonists and more. As of this writing, there were still slots available for would-be performers.
The presence of Guerrilla Theatre is important for Fort Wayne. Its development comes at an exciting time in the continued growth of arts and entertainment in the Summit City.
Guerrilla Theatre’s January show begins at 6:45 p.m. and is scheduled to last until 9:00 p.m. The event is free, but mature content intended for those 18 years and older is expected. Audiences are advised to use caution.
Individuals interested in performing as part of Guerrilla Theatre should sign-up in advance at the event or message the group on Facebook. The link to their page can be found here https://www.facebook.com/events/102415293881767/.
