Movie: This song appeared in 1958 New Oriental Pictures’ comic movie Dilli Ka Thug (Trickster of Delhi) produced and directed by S D Narang. The movie starred late Kishore Kumar, late Nutan, late Madan Puri, late Iftekhar, Krishnakant, late Minoo Mumtaz, etc.
Kishore Kumar Sharma (Kishore Kumar) makes money through gambling and tricking others. His mother gets to know about it and confronts him. Thus, he decides to get a job. He is simultaneously wooing Asha (Nutan). In the process, he disguises as a prince and lands in a club to have dinner with Asha and her uncle (Krishnakant). Kishore in the guise of the prince tells Asha’s uncle that he knows someone, who is in need of a job. Asha’s uncle welcomes him to his Bombay (Mumbai) home.
Kishore himself goes to Asha’s uncle’s home and casually says that he is the son of the journalist Anantram, a murderer believed dead, had killed. Anantram has also killed Kishore’s friend and Kishore has been carrying his friend’s wallet with him. Anantram is actually disguised and staying with Asha as her uncle. The police and Kishore are in cahoots with each other and have a suspicion that Anantram is alive. But, they do not know that he is disguised as Asha’s uncle. Anantram tricks Kishore into writing a suicide letter and gives it to his henchman Bihari (Madan Puri), telling him to kill Kishore at the first opportunity. The Delhi police inspector Dilip Singh (Iftekhar) follows Anantram to Mumbai.
Soon, Asha realizes that the prince is actually Kishore. One day, Kishore waylays Asha, disguised as a Sikh cab driver, on her way back home from her job as a medical doctor. When she recognizes him and smiles, though acting offended, he keeps teasing her through a song. At the end of the song, he almost drowns in the sea. Asha comes to his rescue and contracts a cold. The next day she tells her friend about what had happened.
Her friend calls Kishore, pretending to be Asha, at Anantram’s pharmacy where he is working and tells him to come to the beach immediately. When he leaves the shop happily, Ananatram sees him and sends his goons to kill Kishore. Asha and her friend reach the beach in time to see him faint after a fight with the goons. Asha and her friend take him back to Asha’s home. Soon, Asha realizes that he is only pretending to be injured. The police are hot on the trail of Anantram and his goons. Asha had picked up the wallet of Kishore’s friend that had apparently fallen down from his pocket, without knowing that it was with Kishore. She hands it over to the inspector when he comes to inquire about the assault on Kishore. The lead pair reconciles with each other and begins to date. It is at one of these times that they sing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Shailendra and the music was composed by Ravi.
The man is singing, “These nights, this weather, the bank of the river and this unsteady wind are very enticing.” The girl replies, “2 hearts told each other that we will not part ways anytime.”
Video: Cinematography is by G Singh and F C Marconi (Color Photography). Dance choreography is by Suresh Bhatt-Satyanarayan-Sohanlal.
The video opens with Nutan stopping short while going into her home. She has her back to the camera and she turns smiling because Kishore Kumar has begun to sing this song. Nutan takes an aalap and also hums the song. He continues the song, walking toward her. She begins to sing. The cinematography is very good, despite the fact that the medium is black and white.
Nutan begins to dance. Within a few seconds, Kishore Kumar also joins her in the dance, as she sways to the tune. The lighting is just right. She is sitting on a garden seat and he squats behind it. She places her head on his hand. The song peters out and the video also ends there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and the onscreen performances are by Kishore Kumar and Nutan.
Cultural Influence: This is another typical filmi romantic song where the lead pair reinforces the fact that they are in love with each other and promises each other that they would never move on without each other. The song and the artists are very good. The video is watchable for the same.
