Movie: This song appeared in 2005 Oscar Films’ runaway hit Tamil psychological thriller Anniyan (Stranger) directed by S Shankar and produced by V Ravichandran. The movie starred Vikram, Sada, Vivek, Prakash Raj, Nassar, Nedumudi Venu, Saurabh Shukla, etc.
Ramanujam Iyengar aka Ambi (Vikram) comes from an orthodox Brahmin and an honest consumer protection advocate from Triplicane, Chennai. He is idealistic and law-abiding. He is so naïve that he expects everyone to follow the rules and the law and prosecutes the violators. He is in love with his neighbor and classical singer, Nandini (Sada). But, he is never confident enough to propose to her. A chain letter arrives at his home. It says that Anniyan has appeared and would solve all problems. Ambi begins to complain about all the issues that he had been facing. And the serial murders begin. The murderer always left an anagram code near the place of murder.
Ambi’s and Nandini’s families form a group and decide to go for the Tyagaraja Music Festival in Tillai, Tamil Nadu. Ambi goes with them just to be with Nandini, despite a lot of work. While traveling on a train, Ambi takes the Ticket Checker to task for the caterers supplying substandard food to the non-maintenance of the toilets. Ambi’s friend policeman Chari (Vivek) tricks everyone to make Ambi and Nandini take the opposite upper berths. They converse about things other than the topic required. He again calls the TC for the non-working of the fans. Nandini gets quite fed up with the whole thing.
After reaching Tillai, Ambi proposes his alliance for Nandini to her parents through a letter, saying that giving a love letter to a girl is morally wrong. Guess what the letter contains? It is his CV! Nandini outright rejects him for always talking rules and not being practical. He gets very dejected due to the rejection. Soon, she gets a phone call from a man called Remo. Nandini does not suspect how this man got her number. He has already sent several flower plants as a gift to her. He tells her that he is in love with her and she has to come and meet him at a club where he is performing as a model that night. After the event, Remo meets Nandini and tries to make her say that she had fallen for him. She shows some attitude.
Remo goes to her home and removes the tiles that make the sloping roof of her home. He shocks her and blackmails her into telling him that she loves him. Ambi visits her to tell her that he almost committed suicide, unable to deal with the rejection. But, he stopped himself because at that time suicide was a crime in India. She reveals to him that she is in love with someone else. That breaks him and he is crying while going to his office. On the way, he is kidnapped by the goons of a businessman, against whom Ambi had filed litigation. Ambi is beaten up and thrown in a gutter. He regains consciousness. He wakes up but not as Ambi, as Anniyan!
Anniyan not only beats up the goons but also finds the owner of the company he had filed the petition against. He throws leaches on the poor man (Saurabh Shukla), to kill him. I am not pro-corruption. I am definitely against killing humans, animals or trees. But, if injustice prevails for a long time; someone is bound to stand up against it, sometime or the other. DCP Prabhakar finds it fishy and takes the help of Chari to meet a Sanskrit Scholar because the words left by the murderer at the murder location seemed to be from that language. Chari takes his boss to Ambi, who immediately deciphers the words as the different hells and punishments mentioned in the Hindu treatise Garuda Purana for the wrong-doers.
The next day, Remo meets Nandini at a bus stop to take her for a date. She is going to her college at that time. Nandini says that she needed to know more about him before marriage. Remo gets down from his motorbike and starts moving backward, not bothering about the traffic. Nandini is worried about his safety and runs toward him when the traffic light changes to walk. It is at this time that they sing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Kabilan and the music was composed by Harris Jairaj. This song topped the charts around the time it was released.
The man sings, “Did our eyes meet? You are a plundering mafia. Are you Cappuccino Coffee?” The word nokia is Malayalam for looking or seeing. It is not the cellphone company.
Video: Cinematography is by V Manikandan (left the project halfway) and Ravi Varman. Dance choreography is by Kalyan-Ahmad Khan-Raju Sundaram.
The video opens with the lead pair walking toward the camera in white suits. They move near a white pillar and begin to dance. Vikram and Sada begin to sing. The entire background and foreground have steel in them. Their dresses compliment the steel grey. The song rises to a crescendo and peters out. The video ends as they are seen together in her bedroom.
Artists: The playback of this song has been sung by Leslie Lewis, Andrea Jeremiah and Vasundara Das and the onscreen performances are by Vikram, Sada and others.
Cultural Influence: This typically filmi song has a lot of western influence on it and the lyrics are a combo of Tamil and English. I have found some Malayalam influence on the lyrics of the songs of this movie. Wonder why? The song and artists are very good. The video is watchable for the same.
