Actor Govinda’s Birthday

Born Govind Ahuja this day in 1963, Govinda began his movie career with Ilzaam (1986). Often called Virar Ka Chokra because he came from that Mumbai suburb, he has been nominated for several awards and bagged quite a few of them for his comic antics and acting prowess. Most roles that he has played were positive. But in Shikari (2000), Deewana Main Deewana (2013) and Kill Dil (2013), he played negative characters, convincingly. He got critical acclaim for these roles, though the movies did not do well at the box office. He has also produced some movies, like Hatya (1988).

He is considered the world’s tenth greatest star of stage or screen by the BBC News Online Poll. In 2016, he was declared the Actor of the Decade by India Leadership Conclave. Udit Narayan has sung most of his songs. But, Govinda was lucky, among the younger lot of actors, to have got the playback of late Rafi Sahab for the song Phool ka shabab kya… from Farz Ki Jung (1989). Govinda has also sung for some non-film albums like Govinda (1998). He has worked as a Member of Indian Parliament as well. Happy Birthday Govinda Bhaiya, your fans, including me, are looking forward to your new movie with Salman Khan, a sequel to Partner (2007).

Bollywood says: No, Govinda Govinda Govinda Govinda… from Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1988) was not picturized on him. Though he was present in the movie, it was picturized on Sanjay Dutt. Here are some of my favorite songs picturized on Govinda:

Laal dupattewali tera naam toh bata… Ankhen (1993) (This movie was inspired by Do Phool 1973 and Govinda’s double role in Ankhen is a takeoff from Mahmood’s roles in the older movie.)

Bade mian toh bade mian chote mian subhanallah… Bade Mian Chote Mian (1998) (He played a double role in this movie, with Amitabh Bachchan.)

Hadh kardi aapne… Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000) (He performed 6 roles in this movie.)

Dulhan toh jayegi Dulhe Raja ke sath… Dulhe Raja (1998)

Kisi disco mein jayen… Bade Mian Chote Mian (1998)

Sona kitna sona hai… Hero No 1 (1997)

Akhiyonse goli mare… Dulhe Raja (1998)

Head ya tail… Deewana Mastana (1999)
