Next Wednesday, December 27th, The Melody Inn is keeping up its steady output of concerts for Indianapolis music lovers with another live show featuring local bands. Wednesday’s show will include Cyrus Youngman and The Kingfishers, along with Heaven’s Gateway Drugs, and BYBYE.
Cyrus Youngman and The Kingfishers
Cyrus Youngman and The Kingfishers is an experimental and folk-rock group from Indianapolis. This seven-piece band is comprised of Cyrus Youngman (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica), Matt Corken (guitar, vocals), Andrew Roti (bass), Justin Renner (electric mandolin, vocals), Nathaniel Hood (keyboard, vocals), Glenn Dantam (saxophone, percussion), and Colin Oakley (drums).
With the sheer number of members in their band, Cyrus Youngman and The Kingfishers manage to consistently deliver live shows full of both energy and charisma in spades. If they can’t get you on your feet and jumping like the rest of them, they’ll at the very least get a tapping toe or a nodding head.
Heaven’s Gateway Drugs
On their Facebook profile page, Heaven’s Gateway Drugs classify themselves as a “counter-culture cult rock band”. Despite their origins in Fort Wayne, a city known least for its surging counter-cultural community, Heaven’s Gateway Drugs managed to carve out a niche for themselves in their hometown. While they focus on a psychedelic sound, Heaven’s Gateway Drugs also incorporates a healthy dose of heavy garage rock in their sound. It’s a nice mix, with verses which evoke a Syd Barret-era Pink Floyd, and heavy choruses that lean more toward an early Nirvana at times.
The last band joining in for the Christmas bash at The Melody Inn next Wednesday is the local Indy group BYBYE. BYBYE is an electronic and experimental soul group that walks the line between vintage rock-soul and psychedelic, trippy trance. The group consists of Martin Green (organ, vocals), Nick Peoni (guitar), Sam Shafer (acoustic guitar, keyboard, vocals), Paul Symons (drums), and Cody Davis (bass). Their sound evokes an indie rock vibe laced with atmospheric qualities that make BYBYE stand out apart from the typical, indie-pop bands you hear on the radio.
The Melody Inn’s Christmas Bash kicks off at 7:00 pm next Wednesday night. There’s a five dollar cover charge, but considering the wealth of talented live bands that will be there, it’s really a steal.
