Movie: This song appeared in 1971 moderately successful K R Films’ romantic drama Patanga (Moth) produced by Kedar Kapoor and R S Sharma and directed by Kedar Kapoor. The movie starred late Shashi Kapoor, late Vimmi, late Ajit, late Rajinder Nath, etc.
Shyam (Shashi Kapoor) is Kunwar Amar Singh (Ajit)’s servant’s son. But, the Kunwar considers him his own younger brother and finances his education. Shyam meets Renu (Vimmi) on the first class coach of a train and immediately falls for her. She does not entertain his approach for friendship due to a misunderstanding created by pickpocket Kuldeep (Rajinder Nath), unintentionally. Shyam finds out about her path to college and stalks her singing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Indeewar and the music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
The gist of the song is, “If you stop for a bit, what will you lose? I will look at you till my heart desires. My heart will be peaceful.”
Video: Cinematography is by Rajendra Malone. Dance choreography is by B Sohanlal-Surya Kumar-Kamal.
The video opens with Vimmi looking spitefully at Shashi Kapoor and he is following her. He also begins the song. She turns around to look at him and drops her books. He jumps onto the road and helps her pick up the fallen books. She moves away from him and finds one book less. He takes the book to her, but does not give it.
Shashi Kapoor’s dancing style is so fantastic. I am just crazy about it. She hides behind a car and he follows her to her hiding place. He returns her book to her. She drops her books and climbs down some steps. I wonder, if education is not important, why girls are shown going to college and wasting her guardians’ money.
She still shows some attitude. He pulls her dupatta and she tries to get it back from him. They run around some trees and she falls on some hay. She gets up and moves away further. Soon, she stops and stamps on his foot, as he is following her. He jumps around in pain, still singing. The song peters out and the video ends as she runs away with him.
Artists: The playback singer of this song is Mohammad Rafi and the onscreen performances are by Shashi Kapoor, Vimmi and others.
Cultural Influence: There is no cultural influence on this typically filmi song. But, the song is very good, rendered very well by Rafi Sahab and performed by Shashi Kapoor. The video is watchable for the same.
