Movie: This song appeared in 2001 Excel Entertainment’s National Award Winning comic drama Dil Chahta Hai (The Heart Desires) directed by Farhaan Akhtar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani. The movie starred Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Kulkarni, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Suchitra Pillai, etc. Over the years this movie attained a cult status. The story is set in modern urban Mumbai and Sydney. It also focuses on a major period of change in the lives of the 3 male protagonists.
The story of the movie involves 3 childhood friends – Akash Malhotra (Aamir Khan), Sameer Mulchandani (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddharth Sinha Aka Sid (Akshaye Khanna). Akash is a non-believer in love and does not have any relationship that lasts beyond 2 weeks. Sameer is an amiable well-meaning, desperate romantic. He is also a confused person, who is prone to romantic infatuations. Every time he finds a girl, he thinks that he has found his soul mate. Sid is a painter by profession and the most mature of the 3. He is not interested in trivial romances and is dedicated to his work.
Akash engineers a breakup between Sameer and his current girlfriend Priya (Suchitra Pillai), during their graduation party. When he sets his eyes on Shalini (Preity Zinta), during the college party, he sings this song to impress her. His friends also join him in the song-and-dance sequence.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Sameer and the music was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The gist of the song is, “Let anybody say that we are crazy. The world is at our feet today. We are the youth of today. Why should our style be old?” In short, the song says that they do not care about what people say. They will continue to do what their heart says.
Video: Cinematography is by Ravi K Chandran. Dance choreography is by Farah Khan.
The video opens with all the students jumping in glee and in tune with the music. Aamir Khan joins them on the dance floor. He also begins to dance and sing the song. Saif Ali Khan, Suchitra Pillai and Akshaye Khanna are clapping their hands propelling the music further.
Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna begin to sing their lines and join their friend on the dance floor. Suchitra Pillai and Preity Zinta also join them in the dance. The music rises to a crescendo with all the students jumping vigorously and the video ends there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan and K K and the onscreen performances are by Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna and others.
Cultural Influence: There is not much cultural influence on this typically filmi song. It depicts the young energy bubbling to do something new. The song and the artists are very good. (One of the few of my favorites among the new songs) The video is watchable for them and the choreography by Farah Khan.
