During school days, the children are taught about faith, courage and belief by none other than Mahatma Gandhi. India is freed from the British Rule. Lakshman’s father was a bus driver and dies in a drunken driving accident. After losing his mother as well, the 2 brothers are left alone in the world. Gandhi also gets murdered. But, the brothers’ love for each other grows stronger.

Soon, the Sino-Indian war of 1962 begins and Bharat joins the army as a soldier. The war thickens and Bharat is injured to be sent back home. But, on the way, the injured soldiers are caught by the Chinese. On the other hand, Lakshman makes friendship with an Indian Chinese child Gu Won (Matin Rey Tangu) and his mother Li Leing (Zhu Zhu). When Lakshman gets to know that his brother has been taken prisoner by the Chinese, he goes to Li Leing for help thinking she can contact her relatives in China for help. But, unfortunately, there is nobody in that country Li can call her own. Even the male members of her family had been arrested on suspicion of spying for China.

Only a few people like Banne Chacha (Om Puri), Li Leing and others, keep up the faith burning in Lakshman. But, he gets to know that 264 Indian soldiers had been martyred, though the people close to him try to hide it from him. He almost loses hope. Not letting failures put him down; Lakshman tries the trick a magician (Shah Rukh Khan) had taught him. The next news that the villagers receive is that the war had ended and a line of control (Lakshman Rekha) had been established. The villagers believe that it is Lakshman, who had achieved this big feat. He sings this song at this time.
