This Wednesday, Banker’s Life Fieldhouse will get a special visit from Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum selling artist, The Weeknd. Performing alongside him will be Gucci Mane and NAV.
The stop in Indianapolis will be just one of many along the way for the second-leg of his critically-acclaimed “Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour,” which will later on see the well-known artist performing in New Zealand and Australia, as well as North America. Their stop in Indianapolis at Banker’s Life will begin at 7:30p.m. this Wednesday, Sept. 20.
While known professionally as The Weeknd, Canadaian singer and songwriter, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, got his start back in 2010 when he anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the pseudonym. In 2011, he released three mixtapes: “House of Balloons,” “Thursday,” and “Echoes of Silence,” all of which were critically acclaimed. In 2013, he released his first studio album, “Kiss Land,” which debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200. After releasing “Beauty Behind the Madness” in 2015, The Weeknd became the first male artist to simultaneously hold the top three spots on the Billboard Hot R&B chart.
In terms of musical style, The Weeknd is influenced by past greats like Michael Jackson, Prince, and David Bowie. His vocals are in falsetto over slow tempo numbers with strong bass lines. The Weeknd often includes samples of alternative and punk rock in his songs, a practice not usually seen in contemporary R&B.
Performing with The Weeknd will be artist Radric Delantic Davis, more commonly known in the rap community as Gucci Mane. The long-time rapper recently pushed back the release date of his eleventh studio album, “Mr. Davis,” by one month. It is unknown whether or not he will be performing any of his new material while on tour with The Weeknd.
Hip-hop recording artist and producer Navraj Singh Goroya, better known as NAV, will also be performing on Wednesday. NAV and The Weeknd have collaborated before on NAV’s song “Some Way,” and will be opening for The Weeknd while they are on tour together.
