Antakshari song – Lata/S P/Shailendra/Usha – Raam-Lakshman – Bhagyashree/Salman/Lakshmikant/Huma | Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

Movie: This song appeared in 1989 romantic musical hit film Maine Pyar Kiya (I have fallen in love) directed by Sooraj Barjatiya for Rajashri Productions. The movie starred Salman Khan, Bhagyashree (debut), Reema Lagoo, Alok Nath, Rajeev Verma, etc.

A poor mechanic Karan (Alok Nath) lives in a village with his only child Suman (Bhagyashree). He has secured a job in Dubai to earn money for his daughter’s marriage. He leaves his daughter with his childhood friend Kishan (Rajeev Verma). Kishan allows Suman to live in his home at his friend’s request. Kishan’s son Prem (Salman Khan) befriends Suman, with the assurance that a boy and a girl can have a platonic relationship with each other.

But, their thinking is shattered when they are invited by Seema (Pervin Dastur) the only daughter of Kishan’s business partner Ranjeet (Ajit Vachani) for a party. Prem takes Suman with him. Seema’s cousin brother Jeevan (Mohnish Bahl) is on a target practice spree and almost kills a white pigeon. Suman saves it and Seema has an altercation with her. Prem intervenes and Jeevan mollifies him. When Suman is preparing a plate from the buffet, Jeevan tries to molest her. Prem reaches the room in time and saves her. But, Suman and Prem get a jolt due to Jeevan that a girl and a boy cannot have a platonic relationship. Both had been trying to address their feelings toward each other for some time.

Prem and his parents visit his father’s factory for a pooja and Suman is left alone with Prem’s friend Manohar (Lakshmikant Berde), whom she considers as a brother. As soon as they leave, she sees his letter mentioning that he has fallen in love with her and she realizes that she is in love with Prem. Now, she does not know how to send a reply to him. It is at this time that the white pigeon she had saved comes to her rescue. Prem receives the letter and soon, they return home.

Now, Prem insists that Suman tell him that she loves him. But, she is too shy to say it. He plans a boating trip at 4 that afternoon and tells her to say it then. But, when they are about to leave, Prem’s mother (Reema Lagoo) insists that Suman also join her to apply henna since it is a festival day. Prem gets angry and does not have dinner. He wants her to say that she loves him. Suman informs Manohar, who decides to help her and he takes the initiative to begin this Antakshari song.

Song: The lyrics were penned by Dev Kohli and the music was scored by Raam-Lakshman.

This song is a medley of old Bollywood songs, which ends when the girl confesses that she is in love with the boy.

Video: Cinematography is by Arvind Laad. Dance choreography is by late Jay Borade.

The video opens with the 2 teams ready to play the game. Bhagyashree and Lakshmikant Berde are in one team and Salman Khan and Huma Khan are in the other. There are others accompanying the leaders of each team. Bhagyashree begins the song. Salman Khan replies to her in the song.

A little girl gives a bouquet of flowers to Bhagyashree. She tries to give it to Salman Khan. But, he does not take it from her. Then, she gives it to Lakshmikant Berde gesturing him to give it to Salman Khan. Salman Khan takes it now and continues the song.

He also dances with Reema Lagoo. Pervin Dastur joins Prem’s team and dances with him. She also sings a song. I find Pervin Dastur not very graceful while dancing. I wonder why the makers of this movie had cast her in it.

Salman Khan sings a Raj Kapoor song and acts out like the late actor. Bhagyashree finds it funny. Finally, Bhagyashree confesses that she loves the hero. The song peters out and the video ends as Lakshmikant Berde thanks Lord Ram in the pooja room for the good result of his attempt to help Bhagyashree.

Artists: The playback singers are Lata Mangeshkar, S P Balasubramaniam, Shailendra Singh and Usha Mangeshkar and the onscreen performances are by Bhagyashree, Salman Khan, Lakshmikant Berde, Huma Khan, Reema Lagoo and others.

Cultural Influence: Antakshari is a song game played in India. Usually, there are 2 teams and one team begins the song. The other team begins their song with the last letter of the first song. This continues until a team does not have a song to sing. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
